Mark Plackett books his place at the English Schools after finishing fourth at the Surrey Schools Champs

Three Croydon sprint hurdlers enjoyed podium finishes at the London U17/U15 indoor Games at Lee Valley on a busy weekend’s action for Croydon Harriers.

Shirin Irving went top of the UK under-17 women’s sprint hurdles rankings after triumphing in a new lifetime best of 8.64seconds.

There were further lifetime bests in the 60m hurdles for Taylor Campbell , (9.55secs, U15 girls) and Kertis Beswick (8.20secs, U17 men) who both finished third. U17 Taiwo Kamoju clocked 7.26secs for the 60m.

Meanwhile in Sheffield, Twinelle Hopeson , was selected for the South London Sharks at the McCain inter-city challenge, finishing fourth in the 200m in 24.98seconds.

CROYDON GUARDIAN REPORT

In cross-country action, Dom Nolan led the Harriers challenge at the South East schools inter-county championships at Basildon, with seven Croydon members representing Surrey.

Nolan struck bronze in the senior boy’s race with Peter Chambers seventh. Stevie Lawrence was 25th in the inter-girls race, while Patrick Lucas (39th) and Josh Haasz (40th) contested the inter boys category. Charlie Brackenborough finished 48th in the junior boy’s category. Holly Haile was also in action.

Elsewhere their senior club colleagues finished fifth at the East Surrey cross-country relays at Wimbledon Common. Mark Plackett clocked the second overall fastest time of the day over the 1.95 mile course in 9:51, with Jaran Finn (10:58), Martin Rowe (11:18) and Colin Oxlade (11:22) bringing the quartet home. Plackett's time was the 2nd quickest ever on that course in this event for an under-20 male.

The B team of Andy Del Nevo (11:11), Kartik Iyer (11:04), Atlanta Drummond (14:55) and Robin Dickson (14:11) finished 15th, out of the 21 competing teams. Iyer's time was the fastest by a Harrier U15B on this course, and Dickson's was the third fastest ever achieved by an M65.

In the pick of the ParkRun action, Abbie Burrett won the women’s race at Lloyd Park.
